Theatre & shows

It’s not just the landscape that is full of drama. The Tweed Valley is also home to everything from community theatre and performances from some of Scotland’s leading production companies to live relays of world-class ballet and opera.

The Tweed Valley’s rich heritage and strong sense of tradition are more than matched by the wide range of contemporary arts and activities that thrive in this hugely creative area – including a busy calendar of theatre performances and arts festivals.

At its hub is the Eastgate Theatre in Peebles which offers a year-round performance programme that covers music, drama, dance, comedy, and family shows. An established platform for national and international companies, the theatre is also a key venue for emerging talent and local voluntary arts groups.

And then there are live relays of opera and ballet from Covent Garden and National Theatre productions, blockbuster films, independent cinema, talks and variety shows.

The Eastgate has also created a range of lively annual festivals, including the acclaimed Peebles Outdoor Film Festival in January and Creative Peebles Festival in late-August.

Elsewhere, Bowhill Theatre near Selkirk stages a handful of productions both indoors and out, while Traquair House near Innerleithen hosts promenade performances by Shakespeare at Traquair every summer.

The chance to enjoy Shakespeare while sipping a glass of wine and strolling through the beautiful grounds of Traquair – sometimes with peacocks for company – is an experience not to be missed!
